FIND THE RIGHT PLACE FOR YOUR WEDDING IN FRANCE

The right venue isn't simply somewhere beautiful.

It's the place that makes the wedding you want possible.

Start with what matters to you — then find the place that makes it work

From Provençal estates and countryside châteaux to Parisian hotels and villas overlooking the Mediterranean, France offers an extraordinary range of places to celebrate.

But choosing where to marry isn't only about finding the setting you love. Your venue can shape your budget, guest experience, logistics, ceremony, design and even the way the entire wedding weekend unfolds.

BEFORE YOU START SEARCHING

A beautiful venue can catch your attention. These four decisions will help you understand whether it can actually work for your wedding.

Wedding Guests Outdoors

01 — YOUR GUEST COUNT

How many people does the venue really need to work for?

Capacity isn't simply the number advertised on a venue website.

Think about where your guests will have the ceremony, dinner and dancing — and whether all of those spaces still work for your number of guests.

02 — YOUR BUDGET

What will this venue make the whole wedding cost?

Look beyond the hire fee.

Accommodation requirements, catering, rentals, transportation, staffing and vendor travel can make two similarly priced venues very different financially.

03 — YOUR
NON-NEGOTIABLES

What does your wedding absolutely need to have?

Perhaps it's a ceremony overlooking the sea, dinner beside a pool, a church nearby, accommodation for your closest guests or the freedom to celebrate late into the night.

Separate what would be nice to have from what the venue must provide.

04 — YOUR GUEST EXPERIENCE

What will being there actually feel like for your guests?

Consider how they'll arrive, where they'll stay and what they'll do beyond the wedding itself.

A spectacular venue can become much less appealing if getting everyone there — and home again at midnight — becomes a logistical project.

WHAT COMES FIRST — THE VENUE OR THE VISION?

There are two perfectly valid ways to find the right wedding venue.

START WITH THE VENUE

You find the place first — and let it shape the wedding.

Perhaps you discover a château, villa or domaine that immediately feels right. Its architecture, landscape and atmosphere then begin to influence everything from the ceremony and dinner to the design and flow of the weekend.

This works when you're happy to let the place inspire the celebration.

START WITH THE VISION

You already know what the place needs to make possible.

Perhaps dinner has to happen beside a spectacular pool. You imagine exchanging vows with mountains or the Mediterranean behind you.

You want a historic church nearby. Or everyone staying together for an entire weekend is part of the experience.

In that case, these aren't simply aesthetic preferences. They're requirements that should guide your venue search.

KNOW WHAT CAN BE SHAPED AROUND THE VENUE — AND WHAT THE VENUE MUST PROVIDE.

WHERE IN FRANCE?

Choosing a region is about much more than choosing a backdrop.

Where you celebrate can affect the type of venues available, how easily your guests can reach you, accommodation, weather, local vendors and ultimately the cost of the wedding.

You don't necessarily need to know your exact town — or even your exact region — when you begin.

Understanding what different parts of France can offer will help you narrow the search around the wedding you actually want.

DON'T CHOOSE A REGION BY PHOTOS ALONE

A place that looks effortless in photographs can require surprisingly complicated logistics behind the scenes.

A secluded château may be exactly what you've imagined — until you discover that the nearest major airport is hours away and accommodation is scattered across several villages.

A Mediterranean venue may have the view you've been saving for years, but limited accommodation nearby.

A Paris wedding may simplify international travel while bringing completely different constraints around space, transportation and timing.

Before falling in love with a region, ask yourself not only “Do we want to get married here?” but “What will it take to have our wedding here?”

WHAT WOULD MAKE A VENUE RIGHT FOR YOU?

SEARCH BEYOND REGION
& STYLE

Most couples begin their venue search in one of two ways: they choose a region they love, or they decide on a type of venue — a château, villa, hotel or countryside estate.

But there is another way to start.

Think about the moments or features you already know you don't want to compromise on.

Perhaps you've always imagined exchanging vows with the sea behind you. Maybe dinner around a beautiful pool is central to your vision, or you want your closest guests to stay together in one place for the entire weekend.

You may want a church nearby, mountains in the background, complete privacy for several days or the freedom to celebrate late into the night.

If one of those things is essential to the wedding you're imagining, let it lead the search.

You don't necessarily need to decide on Provence or the Riviera first. You don't even need to know whether you're looking for a château or a villa.

Start with the experience you want to create, then look for the places that can make it possible.

Sometimes the right question isn't “What kind of venue do we want?” but “What do we want to be able to do there?”

ETHE VENUE YOU LOVE STILL HAS TO WORK

Choosing a venue is one of the most emotional decisions you'll make — and one of the most difficult to change later.

Once you've booked, discovering an important limitation can have consequences far beyond losing a deposit. It may mean changing your date, guest plans, accommodation, transportation, ceremony or even members of your vendor team.

A property may photograph beautifully but sleep only 20 of your 60 guests. The outdoor ceremony may be spectacular but the rain plan may be a room you don't like.

Music restrictions might end the celebration earlier than you imagined. Required vendors could change the budget you thought you had.

None of those things automatically makes it the wrong venue.

The question is whether its compromises are the right compromises for your wedding.

DON'T LOOK FOR A PERFECT VENUE.

Look for the venue whose trade-offs work for your wedding.

RESTRICTIONS

What rules around music, catering, vendors, access and timing could affect the wedding you're imagining?

A venue should pass the practical test before it reaches the final shortlist.

CAN YOU BOOK A VENUE WITHOUT SEEING IT IN PERSON?

Yes — but you need to replace what you would learn during an in-person visit with much better due diligence.

For a destination wedding, visiting every venue on your shortlist may simply not be realistic. Professional photography, videos and virtual tours can show you what a property looks like — but not always how it actually works.

Ask to see the spaces as they're used for a real wedding, not only styled photographs. Request a live video tour if possible and follow the route your guests would take from ceremony to cocktails, dinner and dancing.

Look beyond the beautiful spaces, too. Ask to see the rain plan, accommodation, bathrooms, access points and the areas vendors use behind the scenes.

The less you can see in person, the more important it becomes to know what to ask — and what to request to see.

IF YOU CAN VISIT — DO

Seeing the venue in person can reveal things photographs can't: distances between spaces, noise, accessibility, surrounding roads, the condition of accommodation and simply how the property feels when you're actually there.

IF YOU CAN'T — ASK BETTER QUESTIONS

The goal isn't to recreate an in-person visit perfectly. It's to reduce the number of important things you discover only after you've signed the contract — or paid the deposit.

YOUR VENUE SHAPES MORE THAN THE WEDDING DAY

For a destination wedding, the venue can influence the entire trip your guests experience.

Where everyone stays, whether they need cars, how easily they can join welcome drinks, what they can do during the weekend and how they get home after the celebration can all be shaped by where you've chosen to marry.

You don't need to organise every moment of your guests' trip. But think about the experience your venue creates beyond the wedding itself.

The right location can make an entire destination wedding weekend feel easier — for you and for your guests.
